What does a "lead pastor" do?

I regularly feel like I'm in over my head, so even though it may sound pretty pious, I do pray and study the Bible a lot!  While we use a team approach to Sunday preaching, I am responsible for providing leadership to the teaching team.  I work closely with our deacons, Pastor Dan and many of our ministries' leaders to shepherd our church family and help newcomers find their way into our church family.  I also oversee our Worship and Music Ministry.  I love what I do and feel enormously blessed to serve as Lead Pastor.

How long have you been at Hillcrest?

A long time! I started attending in 1990 and became part of the Pastoral Team as Associate Pastor of Worship and Music in 1994.  In the Fall of 2013 the church called me to be Lead Pastor.

Where did you study?

I am a graduate of Jamestown Community College and Cedarville University.

What about your family?

I am surrounded by beautiful women! Danielle and I were married in November 1991. We have four beautiful daughters: Kathryn (married to Jackson), Alexis, Madison and Mackenzie.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Africa. The Lord has used trips to Malawi, South Africa and Republic of Congo to break my heart and change my life. I understand something of His heart for the nations largely because I have been outside of ours.  If you're asking about a vacation, that's a different matter.  I love the ocean and especially vacationing on the beach.

What did you do prior to becoming Lead Pastor?

I worked in business management for over 25 years.  Most recently, I served in management at Register Graphics, a commercial design, printing and fulfillment company.

What does a "family ministries pastor" do?

The family ministries pastor cares for families.  Our focus is to promote the biblical pattern of family that brings glory to God and fulfillment to all in his family.  Does this seem too big to accomplish?  It is!  With God's help and the enlistment of gifted servants of God, we will make a difference.  We have a big God, so what should we do?  Let's do big!

How long have you been at Hillcrest?

I have been at Hillcrest since June 2014.  After three and a half decades pastoring elsewhere we are back to where we started ministry and our hometown!  We are thrilled to serve where we were first served.

jeff johnson smallWhere did you study?

I am a graduate of Jamestown High School, Jamestown Community College, the State University of NY at Buffalo and Bethel Theological Seminary.  God has been good!

What about your family?

I have an amazing wife Kim who has trained me well!  Our oldest son Ryan is an officer in the US Navy and married to April with one grandchild.  Peter is an honorably discharged Marine now attending the University of Cincinnati. Nathan is an honorably discharged Marine who works for Audi and lives with our grand dog Porthos.  Bethany is married to Chris and is a marketing manager for Hilton.  Nathan and Bethany are twins.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

I would like to be the first missionary to Alpha Centauri.  Kim's not interested!

What are your favorite books?

I prefer to read management and theological books, but have enjoyed books like Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy and The Physics of Star Trek.

What's on your smartphone?

Lots of Bible stuff and for music--Pandora worship channels.

Dan Soderberg, visitation pastordan soderberg

Dan visits with the homebound and hospitalized providing them with comfort and prayer.  While serving at Hillcrest, Dan continues his work as director of Impact Campus Fellowship at area middle schools, high schools and Jamestown Community College.

wendyWendy Roof, office manager and church secretary

It's usually Wendy's cheerful voice you hear when you call the church.  Besides answering the phone, she assists our pastors and ministry leaders and handles many day-to-day tasks that keep things running smoothly at Hillcrest.  As an active member of our church family, Wendy coordinates our prayer chain ministry and sings with our worship teams.  She and her husband Lyle also stay busy with three active children.

Barb Hanson, preschool coordinator

Barb brings a love for God, a love for children and extensive Preschool leadership and teaching expertise to Hillcrest. A certified NYS Teacher, and former Hillcrest Preschool parent, Barb launched a Preschool program in Friendship, NY and has served in several key teaching roles in area Preschools.

Kathy Osgood, bookkeeper

As our bookkeeper, Kathy pays the bills and keeps our financial records up-to-date.  She works alongside Wendy in the church office and works closely with our Finance Committee.  Kathy and her husband Lyn are long-time active members at Hillcrest currently leading an adult Sunday School class and participating in the hospitality ministry.  They are the parents of three grown sons.

Our leadership team also includes our Deacon Board, Trustee Board, Christian Education Board and church officers.
